Whale Migration Overview

Humpback whales embark on an incredible migration journey, traveling from the polar waters of Antarctica, where they feed during the summer, to the warmer tropical and subtropical waters of Fiji and Australia to breed and give birth in the winter. This seasonal migration occurs between late May and early November, making it one of the longest migrations in the animal kingdom.

Juvenile Whales

Late May - Mid-August

The first to migrate are the energetic juveniles, known for their playful behaviors, including breaches and tail slaps.

Adult Whales

Next, adult males and non-pregnant females join the migration, often forming competition pods of 3 to 10 whales vying for mates.

Pregnant Whales

Finally, the pregnant females make their way north, noticeably larger as they approach term. Some may even give birth to calves during the journey, with newborns measuring 3.5-4 meters in length.

This remarkable journey showcases the resilience and adaptability of humpback whales,
as they navigate vast distances between feeding and breeding grounds.
